4.7 Smart Cards, Mobiles, and Tablets in IoT

4.7.1 Smart Cards as IoT Identities

Smart cards are constrained computers used for highly secure identification and transaction processing.

  • JavaCard: A subset of Java that runs on smart card microchips.
  • Usage: Token-based authentication for industrial machinery and secure payment gateways.

4.7.2 The Mobile Device as an IoT Gateway

Smartphones and tablets are the primary interface for consumer IoT.

  • Role 1: The Gateway. Using BLE to bridge a fitness band or a smart lock to the internet.
  • Role 2: The Display. Providing a rich UI for sensor graphs and configuration.
  • Role 3: The Primary Sensor. Using the phone's GPS, Mic, and Camera as part of a participatory sensing network.

4.7.3 Technical Interfacing with H/W Units

How a mobile app talks to an IoT node:

  1. Direct (P2P): Using Wi-Fi Direct or Classic Bluetooth (SPP profile).
  2. Indirect (Cloud): App -> HTTPS REST API -> MQTT Broker -> IoT Node. This is the most common pattern for remote control.
