IUCN Red List

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) maintains a "Red List" of threatened species. It is the world's most comprehensive inventory of the global conservation status of biological species.

Categories

  1. Extinct (EX): No known individuals remaining. (e.g., Dodo, Passenger Pigeon).
  2. Extinct in the Wild (EW): Survives only in captivity.
  3. Critically Endangered (CR): Extremely high risk of extinction in the wild.
  • India: Great Indian Bustard, Gharial, Pygmy Hog.
  1. Endangered (EN): Very high risk.
  • India: Tiger, Asian Elephant, Snow Leopard.
  1. Vulnerable (VU): High risk.
  • India: One-horned Rhino, Sloth Bear.
  1. Near Threatened (NT):: Likely to become endangered soon.
  2. Least Concern (LC): Widespread and abundant. (e.g., House Crow, Human).
