2.6 Energy Resources

Lesson 14 of 30 in the free Environmental Studies notes on Siksha Sarovar, written by Rohit Jangra.

Growing Energy Needs

Population Growth + Industrialization + Improved Lifestyle = Exploding Energy Demand.

Energy Sources Classification

1. Renewable (Non-Conventional) Inexhaustible and cleaner.

  • Solar: Photovoltaic cells. Ideal for India (Tropical country).
  • Wind: Wind mills. India is a global leader.
  • Hydro: Large dams (controversial due to displacement) vs Micro-hydel.
  • Geothermal: Heat from earth's core.
  • Biomass: Firewood, Animal waste.

2. Non-Renewable (Conventional) Finite and polluting.

  • Coal: Main source for thermal power in India. High CO2 and Fly Ash emissions.
  • Petroleum: Transport sector backbone. Political volatility.
  • Natural Gas: Cleaner than coal/oil (CNG).

Agro-residues as Energy Source

  • The Problem: Burning crop residue (Parali) causes massive smog in North India winters.
  • The Solution: Biomass Briquetting / Biogas.
  • Convert stalks/straw into compressed high-calorific fuel pellets.
  • Use in industrial boilers or for rural cooking.
  • Win-Win: Reduces pollution + Provides renewable energy.
