Disaster Profile of India

Lesson 21 of 38 in the free Disaster Management notes on Siksha Sarovar, written by Rohit Jangra.

Disaster Profile of India

India is one of the most disaster-prone countries in the world due to its geo-climatic conditions and high population density.

Key Facts:

  • 58.6% of land is prone to Earthquakes.
  • 12% of land is prone to Floods.
  • 8% of land (coastline) is prone to Cyclones.
  • 68% of land is prone to Droughts.

Mega Disasters of India & Lessons Learnt

1. Bhuj Earthquake (2001)

  • Impact: Massive destruction in Gujarat, 20,000+ deaths.
  • Cause: Intra-plate earthquake (rare).
  • Lesson Learnt: Need for stricter Building Codes and earthquake-resistant technology. Led to the formation of GSDMA (Gujarat State Disaster Management Authority), a model for India.

2. Indian Ocean Tsunami (2004)

  • Impact: 10,000+ deaths in India, massive coastal destruction.
  • Cause: Undersea earthquake in Sumatra.
  • Lesson Learnt: India realized the need for an Early Warning System (EWS). The Tsunami Early Warning System was set up in Hyderabad (INCOIS). This event also accelerated the passing of the DM Act 2005.

3. Uttarakhand Floods (2013)

  • Impact: "Himalayan Tsunami," widespread landslides and flooding.
  • Cause: Cloudburst + Glacial lake outburst + Unplanned construction.
  • Lesson Learnt: The fragility of the Himalayan ecosystem. Need to regulate tourism and construction in eco-sensitive zones.

4. Odisha Super Cyclone (1999)

  • Impact: 10,000+ deaths.
  • Lesson Learnt: Importance of Disaster Preparedness and evacuation. Odisha has since become a global role model in cyclone management (e.g., zero casualties in Cyclone Phailin 2013).
