Some Basic Concepts of Chemistry: Matter, Laws of Chemical Combination & Dalton's Atomic Theory

Nature of Matter

Matter is anything that has mass and occupies space. It exists in three physical states — solid, liquid, and gas — which are interconvertible by changing temperature and pressure.

At the chemical level, matter is classified as mixtures (homogeneous/heterogeneous) and pure substances (elements and compounds).

Laws of Chemical Combination

These five laws govern how elements combine and are a favourite source of CBSE/HBSE traps.

  1. Law of Conservation of Mass (Lavoisier): Mass is neither created nor destroyed in a chemical reaction.
  2. Law of Definite Proportions (Proust): A given compound always contains exactly the same proportion of elements by mass.
  3. Law of Multiple Proportions (Dalton): When two elements form more than one compound, the masses of one element that combine with a fixed mass of the other are in a simple whole-number ratio.
  4. Gay-Lussac's Law of Gaseous Volumes: Gases combine in simple whole-number volume ratios at the same T and P.
  5. Avogadro's Law: Equal volumes of all gases at the same T and P contain equal numbers of molecules.
Trap: Gay-Lussac's law is about volumes of gases; the law of definite/multiple proportions is about masses. Examiners deliberately mix these up.

Dalton's Atomic Theory (1808)

  • Matter consists of indivisible atoms.
  • All atoms of a given element are identical in mass and properties.
  • Compounds form when atoms of different elements combine in fixed whole-number ratios.
  • Chemical reactions involve reorganisation of atoms; atoms are neither created nor destroyed.

Limitation: It could not explain the existence of isotopes, isobars, or the law of gaseous volumes, and the assumption that atoms are indivisible was later disproved.
