What is Living and Diversity in the Living World

What is 'Living'?

Defining 'living' is not simple. No single property is exclusive to life, but a combination of defining features distinguishes living organisms from non-living matter.

Twin Defining Features

  1. Metabolism — no non-living object exhibits metabolism. Isolated metabolic reactions in a test tube are neither living nor non-living — hence they are 'living reactions'.
  2. Consciousness — patients in coma supported by machines still show this property at the cellular level. Humans are the only organisms aware of themselves.

Diversity in the Living World

The number of species known and described ranges between 1.7 and 1.8 million. This is the planet's biodiversity.

  • New organisms are continuously being discovered and named.
  • To study such enormous diversity, a system of identification, nomenclature, and classification is essential.
  • Nomenclature — standardised naming; only possible when the organism is already described correctly (identification).
  • Identification — determining that an organism is the same as a known one.

Taxonomy and Systematics

  • Taxonomy — the science of identification, nomenclature and classification.
  • Systematics — study of diversity of organisms and their evolutionary relationships (term from Latin systema). Carolus Linnaeus used Systema Naturae.
  • Taxon (plural taxa) — a unit of classification representing a category at any level (e.g., insects, mammals).

Taxonomic Hierarchy (Taxonomic Categories)

Classification proceeds through a series of obligatory categories arranged in a definite ascending order:

Binomial Nomenclature

Given by Carolus Linnaeus. Each scientific name has two components — the Genus name and the specific epithet (species).

Rules (Universal Rules of Nomenclature):

  1. Names are generally in Latin and written in italics (Latinised).
  2. The first word denotes the genus (starts with a capital letter); the second denotes the species (starts with a small letter).
  3. When handwritten, both words are separately underlined to indicate Latin origin and italics in print.
  4. The name of the author appears after the specific epithet, in abbreviated form (e.g., Mangifera indica Linn.).

Example: Mangifera indica (Mango) — Mangifera = genus, indica = species.

NEET Trap: The species name (specific epithet) is never capitalised, even if derived from a proper noun. The author's name is not italicised.
