Asexual Reproduction
Asexual reproduction involves a single parent producing offspring without the fusion of gametes. The offspring are genetically identical to the parent.
Methods of Asexual Reproduction:
- Fission:

- Spore Formation: Thick-walled spores germinate under moist conditions (e.g., Rhizopus/Bread mould).
Sexual Reproduction: The Basics
Sexual reproduction involves two parents and the fusion of male and female gametes. This leads to the recombination of DNA, which creates Variation.
Why is Variation Important?
Variation is the basis of evolution. It allows species to survive in changing environments. While individual organisms might not survive a drastic change (like a sudden rise in temperature), some variants might have traits that allow them to endure and propagate the species.
DNA Copying:
Reproduction involves creating a copy of the DNA and the cellular apparatus. No biochemical process is absolutely reliable, so the copies have slight differences, leading to variations in every generation.
Sexual Reproduction in Flowering Plants
The flower is the reproductive part of an angiosperm.
Parts of a Flower:
- Sepals & Petals: Accessory parts.
- Stamen (Male): Consists of Anther (produces Pollen grains) and Filament.
- Pistil/Carpel (Female): Consists of Stigma (sticky top), Style (tube), and Ovary (contains Ovules).
The Process:
- Pollination: Transfer of pollen from anther to stigma. Can be Self-pollination or Cross-pollination (via wind, water, animals).
- Fertilization: Pollen tube grows through the style to reach the ovary. Male germ-cell fuses with female germ-cell inside the ovule to form a Zygote.
- Seed Formation: Zygote divides to form an embryo. The ovule develops a tough coat and becomes a Seed. The ovary grows rapidly and ripens to form a Fruit.
Reproduction in Human Beings
Humans show sexual dimorphism and reach reproductive maturity at Puberty.
Male Reproductive System:
- Testes: Produce sperm and testosterone. Located in the Scrotum outside the abdominal cavity (requires lower temperature for sperm production).
- Vas Deferens: Transports sperm.
- Prostate & Seminal Vesicles: Add fluid to make sperm transport easier and provide nutrition (forming Semen).
Female Reproductive System:
- Ovaries: Produce eggs (ova) and hormones (Oestrogen, Progesterone).
- Fallopian Tubes: Site of fertilization.
- Uterus: Site where the embryo implants and develops.
Menstruation:
If the egg is not fertilized, the thick lining of the uterus (prepared for the embryo) breaks down and is expelled as blood and mucus through the vagina. This cycle occurs roughly every 28 days.
