3.2 Sustainable Global Trade Practices

Lesson 13 of 26 in the free Sustainability Practices notes on Siksha Sarovar, written by Rohit Jangra.

Greening the Global Market

Trade is the lifeblood of the global economy, but current trade rules often prioritize "efficiency" over "equity" and "ecology."

1. Fair Trade: Beyond the Label: Fair Trade is a global movement that sets standards for ethical trade.

  • Fair Price: Ensuring farmers aren't at the mercy of volatile global markets.
  • Premium: An extra sum of money paid into a communal fund for workers to use for schools or hospitals.
  • Environmental Standards: Prohibiting harmful pesticides and promoting water conservation.

2. The Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM): The EU is pioneering CBAM—a tax on carbon-intensive imports (like steel, cement, and electricity). This ensures that EU companies, who pay high carbon taxes, aren't outcompeted by foreign companies who can pollute for free. It is a major step toward making carbon a "global cost."

3. Voluntary Sustainability Standards (VSS): These are private standards like FSC (for wood) or RSPO (for palm oil). While they help consumers make better choices, they are often criticized for being too expensive for small farmers in developing nations to join.

4. The Role of the WTO: The World Trade Organization is struggling to balance trade liberalization with environmental protection. "Green Subsidies" (like a government giving money to local solar companies) are often challenged as "unfair trade practices." Reforming the WTO to support the SDGs is a major global priority.
