What is Vastu Shastra?
Vastu Shastra ("science of architecture / dwelling") is India's ancient and comprehensive system of architectural design. Its principles integrate:
- Cosmic geometry (mandalas)
- Environmental physics (sunlight, wind, water flow)
- Energy science (cardinal directions, electromagnetic fields)
- Aesthetics and ergonomics
The earliest references are in the Rig Veda (1500 BCE). Major classical treatises include the Mayamatam, Manasara, Vishvakarma Vastu Shastra, and Brihat Samhita.
Vastu Purusha Mandala
At the heart of Vastu is the Vastu Purusha Mandala — a metaphysical diagram of a cosmic man (Vastu Purusha) lying face-down on the building site, with his head to the northeast and feet to the southwest. The site is divided into a grid (usually 9×9 = 81 padas, or 8×8 = 64 padas) with deities at each position.

Significance of Each Direction
| Direction | Element | Deity | Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| East (Purva) | Fire | Indra | Entry, prayer, study |
| South-East (Agneya) | Fire | Agni | Kitchen |
| South (Dakshina) | Earth | Yama | Heavy storage, master bedroom |
| South-West (Nairutya) | Earth | Nairuti | Master bedroom, treasury |
| West (Paschima) | Water | Varuna | Dining, children's room |
| North-West (Vayavya) | Air | Vayu | Guest room, garage |
| North (Uttara) | Water | Kubera | Treasury, cash storage |
| North-East (Ishanya) | Ether | Isha | Pooja room, water source |
Why North-East is Sacred
The northeast (Ishanya) receives the maximum solar UV radiation in the morning, which has natural disinfectant properties — hence its association with purity and worship. This also explains why open spaces, water tanks, and meditation rooms are placed in the northeast.
Traditional Measurement System
Vastu uses anthropometric units — measurements derived from the human body:
┌────────────────────────────────────────────┐

The Aayadi Calculation
Before construction, the Aayadi Shadvarga (six calculations) determines auspiciousness:
| Calculation | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Aaya | Income / wealth generated by the building |
| Vyaya | Expenditure / loss |
| Yoni | Direction-orientation |
| Vaara | Day-influence |
| Nakshatra | Star-influence |
| Tithi | Lunar day influence |
The dimensions of the building (length × breadth) are computed so that Aaya > Vyaya — i.e., favourable returns.
Five Categories of Vastu
- Bhumi (Land) — Site selection
- Prasada (Building) — House, temple, palace
- Yana (Vehicle) — Chariots, ships
- Shayya (Furniture) — Beds, seats
- Aabharana (Ornaments) — Personal articles
Modern Validation
Some Vastu principles align with modern building science:
- North-east water source → morning sunlight kills bacteria.
- South-west heavy mass → blocks afternoon heat (in northern hemisphere).
- East-facing entrance → first morning sunlight, Vitamin D, mood.
- Cross-ventilation through NE→SW alignment → optimal wind flow.
While not all Vastu prescriptions have scientific support, those rooted in solar geometry, wind patterns, and material properties remain valid even in modern design.
