Free SSC CGL Preparation Guide 2026 — Tier 1 & Tier 2 Strategy

SSC CGL (Combined Graduate Level) is one of India's most competitive government exams — over 30 lakh candidates appear annually for a few thousand Group B and Group C posts. The exam tests a broad range of skills, and without a structured strategy, even hardworking candidates fall short. This guide gives you a free, proven roadmap using Siksha Sarovar resources.

Understanding the SSC CGL pattern

  • Tier 1 (Online CBT): 100 questions in 60 minutes covering General Intelligence & Reasoning (25Q), General Awareness (25Q), Quantitative Aptitude (25Q), and English Comprehension (25Q). Negative marking of 0.5 marks per wrong answer.
  • Tier 2 (Online CBT): Paper 1 is compulsory for all posts — Mathematical Abilities (30Q) + Reasoning and General Intelligence (30Q) + English Language (45Q) + General Awareness (25Q) + Computer Knowledge (20Q). Negative marking applies.
  • Tier 2 also has Paper 2 (Statistics, for JSO posts) and Paper 3 (General Studies Finance & Economics, for AAO posts) for specific posts.

Subject-wise strategy

  • Quantitative Aptitude: focus on arithmetic (profit/loss, interest, percentage, time-speed-distance), geometry and mensuration, and data interpretation. Daily 20-question practise is more effective than marathon sessions.
  • Reasoning: non-verbal (series, analogies, matrix), verbal (syllogisms, blood relations, direction sense). Accuracy matters more than speed in reasoning.
  • English: reading comprehension, cloze test, idioms, spotting errors. Read one editorial daily from any national newspaper.
  • General Awareness: static GK (history, geography, polity, economy) plus current affairs of the last 6 months. This is the highest-ROI section — 25 questions in 5 minutes with zero calculation.

Daily practice routine

Use the Competitive section on Siksha Sarovar for daily timed mock tests, section-wise MCQ banks (Quantitative Aptitude, Reasoning, English, GK), and previous-year paper practice. Attempt at least one full mock test per week to build exam temperament.

Begin your SSC CGL prep: open the Competitive section and attempt your first Reasoning mock test today — identify your weak areas before you study, not after.
